El Yunque

El Yunque, a tropical rainforest, is located on the very east side of the Island, very close to the capital, San Juan. The highest point of the rainforest is 3,543 feet above sea level, and it encompasses more than 28,000 acres of land. In 1976,  the region was designated as a crown reserve, one of the earliest nature reserves, by King Alfonso XII of Spain. After Puerto Rico was ceded to the United States by the Spanish in the Treaty of Paris in 1903, President Theodore Roosevelt proclaimed the area a national forest. El Yunque has been and continues to be a main attraction of the island because of the many tourists who come to see and hike in the forest and to view waterfalls.
